Langton Matravers is a compact village and civil parish on the Isle of Purbeck in south Dorset, sitting on a limestone ridge with sweeping views towards the Jurassic Coast and Lyme Bay. It lies a short distance from seaside Swanage and the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle, making it a handy base for coastal walks and exploring the World Heritage coastline.
Historically the village grew up around Purbeck stone quarrying and a medieval manor associated with the Matravers family, and the local St George's Church still shows ancient features. Today the economy mixes small-scale agriculture, tourism and heritage interest - walkers, fossil-hunters and birdwatchers are common visitors - and the surrounding downs and headlands such as St Aldhelm's Head and Nine Barrow Down give the area a strong archaeological and natural appeal.
