Portesham is a small village and civil parish in west Dorset, England, set on chalk downland a short distance from the coast. It overlooks the shingle ridge of Chesil Beach and the Fleet Lagoon, and sits within easy reach of the Jurassic Coast, with the coastal village of Abbotsbury and the seaside town of Weymouth a short drive away.
The area has a long human story, with prehistoric barrows on the surrounding hills and a strong medieval and rural heritage; local smuggling folklore is part of the coastal character. Today Portesham is largely agricultural but also serves commuters to nearby towns, and retains a tight‑knit community with a church, village hall and a village pub, while walkers and fossil‑hunters are drawn to the nearby coastline and countryside.
