Chard is a historic market town and civil parish in Somerset, England, sitting close to the border with Devon. It occupies the valley of the River Axe at the foot of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so the centre’s steep, characterful streets lead quickly out into rolling countryside.
Once a hub for textiles and glove-making, the town is perhaps best known for 19th-century aviation experiments by John Stringfellow, a piece of local pride showcased in the museum. The centre retains many listed buildings and a traditional market feel; today its economy mixes independent shops and light industry with commuter households, and a lively local calendar and heritage scene keep community life active.
