Chard is a compact market town in Somerset, England, sitting close to the border with Devon and tucked beneath the Blackdown Hills. The town grew up on the valley of the River Axe, and still has a steep, characterful high street, a sense of a traditional market town and easy access to surrounding walking country and cider orchards.
Historically known for cloth and later lace and light engineering, Chard also claims a quirky place in aviation history through the experiments of local pioneers; the story and local artefacts are preserved at Chard Museum. Today the economy mixes small manufacturing and local services, and the town retains a lively community feel with markets, festivals and independent shops.
