Sydling St. Nicholas is a small village in Dorset, England, tucked into the spring-fed valley of the River Syd beneath the chalk hills of the Dorset Downs, a few miles north-west of Dorchester. Narrow lanes, thatched cottages and a central green beside the stream give it a picture-postcard feel and make it popular with walkers and photographers.
Historically the settlement grew around agriculture and a medieval church; today farming remains important but tourism, holiday lets and commuting to nearby towns also help the local economy. Community life still centres on the church, village hall and pub, and the village’s well-preserved buildings and tranquil setting reflect much of Dorset’s rural heritage.
