Tolpuddle is a small village and civil parish in rural Dorset, England, set amongst rolling farmland a short drive from the county town of Dorchester. It retains a quiet, agricultural character with narrow lanes, stone and thatched cottages, and attracts walkers and visitors looking for a peaceful corner of the Dorset countryside.
The village is best known for the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs - six agricultural labourers transported to Australia in 1834 for forming a friendly society - and that history is commemorated by a local museum, memorials and the annual Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival, which draws trade unionists, historians and tourists and provides a noticeable seasonal boost to the local economy.
