Rye is an historic, cobbled hilltop town in the district of Rother, East Sussex, England, sitting just above the flats of Romney Marsh and close to the mouth of the River Rother and the English Channel. Once a member of the Cinque Ports and a bustling medieval port, its harbour silted up over centuries, leaving a well‑preserved centre of timber-framed houses, the Ypres Tower and the atmospheric Mermaid Inn, plus a long history of smuggling folklore.
Today Rye combines a strong tourist economy with an active local community of artists, galleries and antique shops, boosted by nearby natural attractions such as Rye Harbour and Camber Sands. It also has notable literary connections - Lamb House was home to Henry James and the town inspired E.F. Benson’s fictional Tilling - and stages regular arts and food events that draw visitors while retaining a small‑town social feel.
