Hythe is a compact seaside town on the Kent coast in the district of Folkestone and Hythe, Kent, England, sitting at the edge of the low-lying Romney Marsh. It has a long maritime and defensive history as one of the historic Cinque Ports towns, with shingle beaches, a broad promenade and the long Napoleonic-era Royal Military Canal nearby; the town centre mixes medieval and Georgian buildings and a distinctive old parish church tower that dominates the skyline.
Today Hythe combines tourism and local commerce - antique shops, cafés and sailing clubs are common - and is popular with day-trippers and retirees while many residents commute to nearby towns. A local oddity and draw is the light railway, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, which adds charm and a sense of continuity with its coastal and military past.
