Rother sits in the eastern part of East Sussex, a patchwork of low-lying coast and rolling High Weald countryside. The district takes its name from the River Rother, which winds down to the coast and out through saltmarshes at Rye Harbour, while stretches of sand such as Camber Sands give way to agricultural land and wooded ridges inland.
Its towns have strong historic character: Rye retains a medieval layout and harbour history as a former Cinque Port, while Battle is dominated by the abbey and the story of 1066. On the coast Bexhill-on-Sea is known for the modernist De La Warr Pavilion, and small villages and market towns add a mix of period architecture, galleries and craft traditions.
Economically the area combines tourism, farming and small-scale industry, with a growing arts and heritage offering that attracts visitors year round. Socially it has many longstanding communities and an older demographic in parts of the coastal belt, balanced by active conservation projects and nature reserves that protect important wildlife habitats along the English Channel frontage and within the High Weald.
