Five Ashes is a small village in the district of Wealden, in East Sussex, England, tucked into the rolling, wooded landscape of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It sits a few miles from Heathfield and other small market towns, making it a quiet rural settlement with good access to country lanes and footpaths that attract walkers and riders.
Historically the village owes much to the Weald’s mix of woodland, pasture and early ironworking, and its name is thought to refer to a notable group of ash trees rather than any industrial heritage. Today Five Ashes is largely agricultural with a mix of long-standing local families and commuters, and retains a strong village identity through local events, a village hall and small-scale community activities rather than any large commercial centre.
