Reigate is a historic market town in Reigate and Banstead, Surrey, England, sitting at the foot of the North Downs. It grew around a Norman castle motte and the medieval Reigate Priory, now a museum and local library, and the town centre still shows a mix of independent shops, cafés and attractive Victorian architecture.
The town is a popular base for commuters to London and is close to Gatwick Airport, yet offers easy access to countryside - Reigate Hill and the surrounding chalk downs give good walks and panoramic views, and the 19th-century Reigate Fort is a local landmark. Beneath the high street are sandstone caves and tunnels once used for storage and wartime shelters, and the community maintains a lively programme of markets and events that keeps the town socially active.
