Polegate is a small market town in the district of Wealden, East Sussex, England, sitting where the main roads and a historic railway junction link the coastal towns of Eastbourne and Hastings. The town expanded in the 19th century with the arrival of the railways and today is crossed by the popular recreational route, the Cuckoo Trail, while being within easy reach of the low-lying marshes of the Pevensey Levels and the ridgelines of the South Downs.
Modern Polegate acts largely as a commuter and local-service centre, with pockets of light industry and retail alongside a busy community life; residents make good use of cycling and walking routes and nearby nature reserves. Its railway heritage and proximity to important wetlands give it an unusual mix of transport history and environmental interest for a relatively small town.
