Rottingdean is a coastal village and civil parish within the city of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex, tucked between the chalk uplands of the South Downs and the shingle shore of the English Channel. It retains a compact, historic centre of thatched cottages, listed buildings and an old windmill on the hill, with a medieval parish church and a small pebbled beach that give it a distinctly villagey feel despite being inside the city boundary.
Historically a fishing and farming community that grew as a Victorian seaside retreat, Rottingdean now combines tourism and local shops with a largely residential, commuter population travelling into Brighton and Hove or London. The parish has an active local life - village fetes, arts connections and independent cafés and pubs - and is prized for its period architecture and access to coastal walks and the Downs.
