Canvey Island is a low-lying, reclaimed island and civil parish in the borough of Castle Point, Essex, sitting out in the outer reaches of the Thames Estuary in England. Its landscape is dominated by sea walls, marshes and industrial estates and the island is still defined by the memory of the disastrous North Sea flood of 1953, which prompted major flood-defence works and shaped much of the modern shoreline.
Today the island mixes industry and leisure: there are oil and chemical storage facilities alongside seaside amusements, a local football club and a lively community scene that once helped spawn the 1970s pub‑rock sound associated with bands like Dr Feelgood. Nature reserves and salt marshes (for example Two Tree Island) offer wildlife and birdwatching, while easy road and rail links via nearby Benfleet and proximity to Southend-on-Sea and London make it both a working landscape and a commuter dormitory with a strong local identity.
