Thaxted is a small, historic market town in the district of Uttlesford in north‑west Essex, England. Perched on gentle hills and dominated by the striking 15th‑century Church of St John the Baptist, the town is notable for its timber‑framed houses, the medieval Guildhall and a restored windmill, all reminders of its medieval wool and crafts economy.
Today Thaxted has a lively cultural life for its size: it is closely associated with composer Gustav Holst (the hymn tune “Thaxted” stems from his music) and stages music and arts events that draw visitors from nearby Saffron Walden and beyond. The local economy mixes tourism, independent shops and artisans with many residents commuting to London, and the town retains a strong community spirit visible at fairs, concerts and traditional folk activities.
