Berkeley is a small historic town in the district of Stroud, in rural Gloucestershire, set on the low-lying floodplain by the Severn Estuary at the western edge of the Cotswolds. Its skyline is dominated by Berkeley Castle, a largely medieval fortress long held by the Berkeley family and notorious for its links with the deposition of King Edward II, while the town is also proud as the birthplace of Edward Jenner, whose contributions to vaccination are commemorated at the Edward Jenner Museum.
Traditionally agricultural with a history tied to the nearby docks and canals around Sharpness, modern Berkeley mixes farming and tourism - castle visits and the Jenner museum bring regular visitors - with commuting to nearby centres such as Gloucester and Bristol. The footprint of 20th-century industry remains visible in the now decommissioned Berkeley nuclear power station, and locally the town retains a close-knit feel, with shops, pubs and community events reflecting its long history and rural character.
