Shacklewell sits in the western part of the London Borough of Hackney, tucked between Dalston, Stoke Newington and Newington Green. It is largely residential, with a mix of Victorian terraces, post‑war housing and small industrial plots, and benefits from good links to the Overground at Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction and nearby local high streets and markets such as Ridley Road Market.
The area has a long working‑class and immigrant history and today is notable for its cultural diversity, creative micro‑businesses, independent cafés and community groups. Like much of inner London, Shacklewell has experienced significant change in recent years: pockets of gentrification sit alongside established social networks and active local campaigns to preserve affordable housing and community space. Historically the name evokes a former local spring or well and the neighbourhood still feels like a compact, villagey corner amid the wider urban energy of Hackney.
