Romsey is a compact historic market town in Test Valley, Hampshire, England, set on the banks of the chalk-stream River Test some seven miles north of Southampton. Its position between rolling Hampshire countryside and the fringes of the New Forest gives it an attractive semi-rural character while keeping good road and rail links to the south coast and the larger urban centres.
The town is best known for the impressive Norman Romsey Abbey, a lively market and a mix of timber‑framed and Georgian architecture, and for nearby country estates such as Broadlands and the National Trust house at Mottisfont. Economically it combines a local retail and service economy with many residents commuting to Southampton or working in light industry and tourism; the River Test’s renowned fly-fishing and the area’s gardens and historic houses make it popular with visitors.
