Compton is a small riverside village just a couple of miles south of Winchester in Hampshire, England. It sits close to the chalk streams of the River Itchen and the rolling downland at the edge of the South Downs, with open farmland, small woods and a scattering of traditional cottages; the nearby Shawford railway halt and road links make it an easy commute into Winchester or Southampton.
Historically the name means “valley farm” and the settlement retains a distinctly rural character, with a number of older buildings and countryside footpaths. The local economy is largely residential with farming and small local businesses, and the chalk‑stream ecology of the Itchen valley - famous locally for trout and traditional watercress beds - adds both wildlife interest and a sense of historic landscape use.
