Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, sitting in the district of East Hertfordshire roughly twenty to twenty-five miles north of London. The town is famed for its riverside setting at the meeting of the River Lea, the River Beane, the River Rib and the River Mimram, and for historic features such as the motte and gatehouse of Hertford Castle, a legacy of its medieval market-town status and later Georgian and Victorian development.
Today Hertford combines a busy local economy and public-sector presence with a strong commuter role, independent shops, regular markets, a modest arts scene and riverside pubs and walks. It retains a village-like social feel in parts while serving as an administrative and commercial hub for the surrounding countryside.
