Harpenden is a pleasant market town in the borough of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, lying along the valley of the River Lea a short distance north of London. It combines leafy residential streets and attractive period housing with green spaces such as Harpenden Common and a bustling High Street and Old Town of independent shops, cafés and pubs.
Historically it expanded from a village after the arrival of the railway and today is a prosperous commuter town with good schools, sports clubs and an active community calendar. It’s also home to Rothamsted Research, one of the world’s oldest agricultural research institutes, which gives the town an unusual mix of local retail, scientific employment and village-like social life.
