Great Thorness is a small coastal hamlet on the north‑west side of the Isle of Wight, tucked beside the shingle and sandy shoreline of Thorness Bay. The immediate landscape mixes farmland, saltmarsh and coastal scrub, making it attractive for birdwatching and low‑key seaside walks along the coastal path; the bay is also popular with sailors and families in summer.
Historically the settlement grew from agricultural and small‑scale maritime activity and today the local economy is a blend of farming and tourism - there is a well‑known holiday park at Thorness Bay and easy access to nearby centres such as Cowes and Yarmouth. Socially it remains a quiet, close‑knit community prized for tranquillity and scenic coastal stretches rather than shops or nightlife.
