Godmersham is a small village and civil parish set in the rolling countryside of Kent, a few miles north of Ashford and close to the chalk of the North Downs. The landscape is characteristically Kentish - farmland, hedgerows and lanes with the nearby Stour valley - and the community is compact and largely residential, with many people commuting to nearby towns while enjoying a rural way of life.
Its most striking feature is Godmersham Park, an elegant Georgian country house long associated with the family of Jane Austen’s brother and a focus for literary-historical interest; the parish church of St Lawrence Church and other historic buildings underline the village’s deep roots. Economically the area remains agricultural at heart, complemented by small local services, and socially it retains the feel of a close-knit village with occasional attention from Austen enthusiasts and heritage visitors.
