Margate in Thanet, Kent, England is a classic English seaside town on the North Sea coast, historically one of the Victorian pleasure resorts with long sandy beaches and a working harbour. It occupies the eastern tip of the Isle of Thanet between Broadstairs and Ramsgate; the town’s light and seascapes famously attracted J.M.W. Turner and inspired the name of the Turner Contemporary gallery.
Today Margate mixes heritage and reinvention: the vintage amusement park Dreamland, the mysterious Shell Grotto and a compact Old Town of independent shops, cafés and galleries sit alongside a seasonal hospitality economy. Since the opening of Turner Contemporary there has been noticeable regeneration and growth in creative industries and tourism, bringing investment and rising property interest while social and seasonal challenges remain part of the town’s character.
