Fordwich is a tiny riverside town just a couple of miles north-east of Canterbury in Kent, England, sitting where lanes and the shallow River Stour meet. Once an important medieval river port with a chartered borough, its compact streets and waterside quay hint at a richer past and there have been archaeological finds from Roman and medieval periods in the locality.
Today it feels more like a close-knit village than a bustling town: largely residential with surrounding farmland and river meadows, small-scale local businesses and leisure use of the river attracting walkers, anglers and those passing between Canterbury and the east Kent coast. Its small population and historic character give it a quiet, preserved charm that contrasts with the cathedral city a short distance away.
