Hersden is a small village about three miles north of Canterbury in Kent, England, sitting on the edge of low-lying farmland and marshes. It lies close to important wetland habitats such as Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve and the River Stour, which give the area good birdwatching and walking opportunities and a noticeably rural character despite the village’s proximity to the city.
The village was largely created in the early 20th century to house miners at Chislet Colliery (opened 1919, closed in the late 1960s) and still shows that industrial heritage in its terraces and community layout. Today Hersden combines that mining-era identity with a commuter role for Canterbury, retaining a strong local community feel, a village hall and a handful of local amenities while being shaped by the surrounding agricultural and nature-rich landscape.
