Map of the UK

Dartford sits in northwest Kent, England, where the low-lying valley of the River Darent meets the approaches to the River Thames. Its position on the edge of London has long made it a transport hub, dominated today by road links and the Dartford Crossing that carries traffic across the Thames.

The town grew from a medieval market centre and a string of mills along the River Darent, and remnants of that industrial past survive alongside Victorian buildings and pockets of conservation land such as Dartford Heath. It also has a curious cultural claim to fame: two local teenagers who met at the station went on to form one of Britain’s best-known rock bands.

Modern Dartford is a mix of suburban neighbourhoods, light industry and retail, with major shopping and regeneration projects nearby like Bluewater at Greenhithe and the developments around Ebbsfleet and Ebbsfleet International. The area functions largely as part of the London commuter belt while still maintaining local markets, parks and community activities that give it a distinct identity.
