Darenth is a small village and civil parish in the borough of Dartford in Kent, set in the scenic Darent Valley. The River Darent flows through the area, giving the parish a riverside and countryside character with hedgerows, footpaths and open green spaces; it also sits within easy commuting distance of London, so many residents combine village life with work in the capital.
Historically the parish was agricultural and retains a number of historic buildings and a strong local community feel. A notable element of its more recent past was Darenth Hospital, a large Victorian psychiatric institution whose closure and subsequent redevelopment have been significant in shaping the parish’s social and economic landscape; today local activity often centres on conservation of the valley and village events.
