The cluster of villages around East Peckham, West Peckham, Mereworth and Wateringbury sits in the gently undulating countryside of Tonbridge and Malling, Kent, England, much of it centred on the floodplain and tributaries of the River Medway. The area is characterised by historic hop gardens and orchards, medieval churches and country houses – most notably the Palladian Mereworth Castle – with a mix of listed buildings, former mills and long hedgerows that give a distinctly rural character.
There’s a strong local community feel, with village halls, pubs, sports clubs and seasonal fêtes, while Wateringbury’s railway station makes the area convenient for commuters to nearby Maidstone and London. Economically it remains partly agricultural, reflecting its hop- and fruit-growing past, but now combines small local businesses, heritage tourism and a commuter population, all within a landscape prized for conservation and historic interest.
