Tunbridge Wells is a local government district in Kent, in south‑east England, centred on the historic spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. The district also includes smaller towns and villages such as Paddock Wood and Southborough, and sits within easy commuting distance of London, which helps shape its economy and housing market.
Geographically it lies on the edge of the High Weald, with rolling sandstone ridges and wooded countryside that attract walkers and nature lovers. The area grew up around chalybeate springs in the 17th and 18th centuries and many Georgian and Victorian buildings survive in the town centre, notably the colonnaded promenade of The Pantiles.
Today the district mixes a strong local service and retail sector with tourism, light industry and a significant number of commuters. Cultural life is active for a town of its size, with theatres and galleries such as the Assembly Hall and the Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery, regular events, a lively independent shop and café scene and well‑used parks like Calverley Grounds.
