Knowsley

Metropolitan district in England

Coordinates:53.43, -2.83
OS grid ref:SJ 44 92

Located in Merseyside to the east of Liverpool, Knowsley is a borough of suburban towns and stretches of parkland and green belt. It includes communities such as Kirkby, Huyton, Prescot, Halewood and Whiston and sits between the city and neighbouring boroughs like St Helens.

Culturally the area is known for Knowsley Hall, the ancestral home of the Earls of Derby, and the popular Knowsley Safari Park, which draws visitors from across the region; Prescot also has a long theatrical and watchmaking history. There’s a strong community spirit with local festivals, amateur theatre and football forming part of everyday life.

Economically the borough transitioned from heavy industry and mining to a mix of logistics, light manufacturing and retail, while many residents commute into Liverpool for work; pockets of deprivation have prompted ongoing regeneration and investment. Green spaces, decent road and rail links and proximity to the city give it a blend of town and country living.
