Great Altcar is a small, low-lying rural parish in West Lancashire, Lancashire, set on the West Lancashire Plain just inland from the River Alt and close to the Sefton Coast and the sands of Formby. The landscape is dominated by drained mossland and pasture, with a patchwork of small farms, drainage ditches and hints of the peat-rich soil that once supported peat-cutting and wetland habitats.
The community is quiet and agricultural in character, with a handful of traditional buildings and a historic parish church at its heart, and it benefits from nearby recreational and conservation areas that attract birdwatchers and walkers. The area also has a long association with military training through the nearby Altcar Training Camp and rifle ranges, giving the parish an interesting mix of rural life, natural interest and local history.
