Little Altcar is a small, largely rural parish in the borough of Sefton in Merseyside, sitting on the coastal plain between Formby and Southport. The landscape is low-lying and shaped by the nearby River Alt, extensive mossland and coastal dunes, so it’s notable for wetland habitats and easy access to the dune pinewoods and shore that attract birdlife and walkers.
Historically part of Lancashire, the area retains a strong agricultural character alongside a number of commuters who work in nearby towns and Liverpool. Local identity is influenced by its marshy past - reflected in the place-name - and by nearby military training and shooting ranges; community life is quiet and village-focused, with small businesses, farming and outdoor recreation the most visible features of the local economy and culture.
