Formby sits on the coast in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, a few miles north of Liverpool and fronting the Irish Sea. It’s best known for its wide sandy beaches, shifting dunes and the pinewoods at Formby Point and nearby Ainsdale, much of which is protected by the National Trust and local conservation groups; the area is famous for its red squirrel population and coastal birdlife.
The town has a mix of Victorian and more modern suburban housing and functions partly as a commuter settlement for Liverpool, while tourism linked to the beaches and nature reserves supports local shops, cafés and small businesses. There’s a long social tradition of seaside leisure and conservation activism, and ongoing coastal-management work reflects both the historic value and the vulnerability of the shoreline and dune systems.
