Allerton Bywater is a village and civil parish in the City of Leeds, in West Yorkshire, set along the corridor of the River Aire. The landscape is notable for reclaimed colliery land and lakes, most visibly in the nearby St Aidan's Country Park, which has become a popular spot for walking, birdwatching and wetlands restoration.
Historically the community grew around coal mining - remnants of the industry and the memory of pits such as Allerton Bywater Colliery are still part of local identity - but since the late 20th century the area has shifted towards a mixed economy of commuting, light industry and conservation-led regeneration. There remains a strong local social life centred on village clubs, schools and heritage groups that keep the mining past and countryside recovery in view.
