Swillington is a village and civil parish in the City of Leeds, in West Yorkshire, lying a few miles east of Leeds city centre near the A1(M) corridor and neighbouring villages such as Garforth and Aberford. Historically it was an agricultural settlement that was reshaped by 19th‑ and 20th‑century coal mining, and much of the landscape has since been reclaimed and greened following pit closures.
Today Swillington is a semi‑rural, largely residential community with a parish church, village amenities and a primary school, popular with commuters while retaining countryside character; notable local features include floodplain meadows such as Swillington Ings beside the River Aire, which are valued for birdlife and informal recreation, and a community balancing conservation interests with modest development pressure.
