Charnwood

Local authority district in Leicestershire, England

Coordinates:52.74, -1.15
OS grid ref:SK 57 15

The district of Charnwood sits in the north‑west of Leicestershire and combines a sizeable urban core with large areas of countryside. Its largest town and administrative centre is Loughborough, which anchors a network of market towns, suburbs and villages that form part of the commuter belt for Leicester.

Geographically the district is dominated by Charnwood Forest, a patchwork of heath, woods and rocky outcrops including popular high points such as Beacon Hill, and it contains well‑loved greenspaces like Bradgate Park with its deer and ruined house linked to Lady Jane Grey. The area is also of global geological interest for Precambrian fossils first found locally; historically it was shaped by quarrying - notably around Mountsorrel - and earlier coal workings.

Economically Charnwood has a mixed base: advanced engineering and light manufacturing sit alongside a strong service sector and the research and student population centred on Loughborough University. Socially the district ranges from commuter suburbs to close‑knit rural communities, with weekly markets, festivals and plenty of outdoor recreation along the parks and the River Soar.
