Swithland is a small historic village in the district of Charnwood, Leicestershire, England, set on the western edge of Charnwood Forest. Its compact cluster of stone cottages, a parish church and quiet lanes give it a distinctly rural character while remaining within easy reach of Leicester, so many residents commute but the village keeps a close-knit feel.
The locality is best known for Swithland Wood and Swithland Reservoir - the wood preserves traces of old slate quarries where distinctive Swithland slate was quarried for roofs and gravestones, and the reservoir and surrounding paths attract walkers and birdwatchers. Railway enthusiasts also visit the nearby preserved Great Central Railway around Swithland Sidings, adding an industrial-heritage note to a largely pastoral setting.
