Liverpool

Metropolitan district in England

Coordinates:53.4, -2.91
OS grid ref:SJ 39 89

The metropolitan district of Liverpool in England sits on the eastern bank of the River Mersey and forms the core of the Liverpool City Region in Merseyside. Its 18th‑ and 19th‑century port and docks, including the redeveloped Royal Albert Dock, fuelled rapid growth during the Industrial Revolution and left a skyline of notable civic buildings such as St George's Hall.

Today Liverpool is a global cultural hub - famed as the home of The Beatles and for its passionate football scene centred on Anfield and Goodison Park - with a strong tourism, creative and service economy. The city is socially diverse with a distinctive Scouse identity, has seen major regeneration of waterfront and inner‑city areas, and remains shaped by both its maritime heritage and the long social consequences of deindustrialisation.
