Festival Gardens is a riverside electoral ward in the south of Liverpool centred on the post-industrial green space created for the early 1980s International Garden Festival. The area sits along the banks of the River Mersey and gives open views across to the Wirral, with promenades and parkland that make it a popular local spot for walking, cycling and informal recreation.
Historically the ward sits on former dockland and has been shaped by waves of regeneration and community-led activity rather than heavy commerce; its character mixes landscaped public spaces with pockets of housing and local services. The legacy of the festival, together with nearby stretches such as Otterspool, gives the area a distinct cultural memory and makes it a quieter, greener counterpoint to Liverpool’s busier city centre.
