Fort Horsted sits within the Medway conurbation in north‑east Kent, taking its name from a 19th‑century military work built as part of the Palmerston ring of defences for Chatham Dockyard. The fort itself occupies a prominent rise and, while no longer in military use, gives the area a distinctive historic landmark amid suburban streets and patches of green, with glimpses across the River Medway and the surrounding North Kent landscape.
Today the ward is a mix of predominantly residential neighbourhoods alongside pockets of light industry and retail, and is home to commuters travelling to Chatham, Rochester or London. Local community life is typical of outer‑urban Medway wards, with active residents’ groups, accessible parks and the sort of modest high‑street and leisure facilities that serve families and long‑standing local households.
