Stanford is a very small rural parish in Breckland, Norfolk, in the east of England, set in the distinctive Breckland landscape of sandy soils, heath and conifer plantations. The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of arable farms, pinewoods and heaths with nearby towns such as Thetford and Thetford Forest providing the nearest services and leisure destinations.
A notable feature of the area is the presence of the Ministry of Defence’s Stanford Training Area, which means parts of the parish are used for military exercises and public access can be restricted; that use has, paradoxically, helped preserve archaeological sites and pockets of wildlife. Locally the economy remains largely agricultural with scattered farmsteads and a very small population, and the built heritage - a few historic farmhouses and rural church remnants - reflects its long countryside history.
