Breckland is a local government district in Norfolk, England, created in 1974 and administered from Dereham. It covers a wide rural area of low-lying farmland and small market towns, including Thetford, Swaffham and Attleborough, each with a long local history and active community life.
The district takes its name from the distinctive Brecks landscape - a mix of sandy soils, open heath and pinewood dominated by Thetford Forest - which supports unusual wildlife and a number of rare plants and insects, giving the area a markedly different character from much of coastal Norfolk. Scattered archaeological sites and historic churches reflect centuries of rural settlement and land use.
Economically the area combines arable farming, horticulture and forestry with light industry and logistics, while good road and rail links mean towns such as Attleborough serve commuters to Norwich and Cambridge. Local culture is rooted in market towns, country shows and conservation projects that celebrate the Brecks’ distinctive natural and historic heritage.
