Wells-next-the-Sea is a small coastal parish on the Norfolk coast, set within North Norfolk in Norfolk, England. It sits at the mouth of the River Glaven and is famous for its long sandy beach backed by pine woods and colourful beach huts, a tidal quay and shingle banks that shelter a working fishing harbour. The surrounding salt marshes and nearby nature reserves, including Blakeney Point, make it a magnet for birdwatchers and seal-spotters and give the area a strong sense of wild, maritime landscape.
Historically a market town with maritime connections, Wells has a compact town centre of period buildings, a continuing small fishing fleet and a visible RNLI lifeboat presence; today its economy mixes fishing with a heavy reliance on tourism, short-break cottages and local hospitality. Socially it combines a year‑round local community with a marked summer influx of visitors, and retains a lively independent shop and café scene alongside events and walks that celebrate the coastal environment.
