Leigh Woods sits on the southern rim of the dramatic Avon Gorge in North Somerset, directly opposite Clifton in Bristol. Much of the woodland is cared for by the National Trust and is threaded with footpaths and an arboretum, offering striking views of the gorge and the Clifton Suspension Bridge; the cliffs and mixed broadleaf canopy make it a colourful spot for spring bluebells and varied birdlife.
Historically the area was landscaped and developed in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, which is reflected in the large houses on the upper slopes and its reputation as an affluent residential neighbourhood. Socially and economically it functions largely as a commuter suburb of Bristol, while also serving as a popular local recreational space with old quarry workings, caves and a strong community of walkers, cyclists and families.
