North Somerset is a unitary authority in England immediately west of Bristol, straddling a stretch of coastline on the Bristol Channel and a rural hinterland. The area includes well‑known seaside towns such as Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead, plus smaller towns and villages like Nailsea and Yatton. Inland the landscape falls towards the foothills of the Mendip Hills and the low, green corridors of the Gordano Valley.
North Somerset combines seaside tourism and Victorian resort heritage (notably Clevedon’s listed pier and Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier) with agriculture, light industry and a strong commuter relationship with Bristol. It was created as a unitary authority in the 1990s, has a long local history from prehistoric and Roman traces to Victorian development, and hosts key local infrastructure such as Bristol Airport, which is a significant employer and transport gateway for the region.
