Portishead is a coastal town on the southern shore of the Severn Estuary in North Somerset, England, with broad estuary views toward Wales and a dramatic tidal range that shapes its shoreline. Historically a small fishing and Victorian seaside settlement, it later developed a working harbour and the distinctive cooling towers of the former Portishead power station, which stood as a local landmark until their removal; the waterfront has since been transformed with the long-running marina and harbour redevelopment around Portishead Marina.
Today the town mixes commuter life for nearby Bristol with a strong local community, boutique shops and cafés, and a continuing focus on waterfront regeneration and housing; the nearby industrial docks such as Royal Portbury Dock underline the area's economic links to the wider Avonmouth–Bristol port complex. Culturally it punches above its size - the trip‑hop band named Portishead gave the town a global association - and there have been long‑standing discussions about better rail connections back into Bristol to support growing local demand.
