Barkston Ash is a small village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, a few miles west of Selby on the arable plains of the Vale of York. Its name comes from an ancient ash tree that traditionally marked the meeting-place of the old wapentake, and the settlement has historically lent its name to a county electoral area.
Today it remains a quiet, largely agricultural community with a compact village core and a strong local identity; many residents commute to nearby towns and cities such as Leeds and Wakefield. The area’s appeal is its rural character, surviving historic cottages and field patterns, and low-key local events and walking routes rather than any large-scale industry.
