Burton-cum-Walden is a small, rural parish tucked into Coverdale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, within North Yorkshire. The landscape is classic Dales country - limestone scars, drystone walls and green pastures criss-crossed by footpaths and the valley stream - and it includes the picturesque village of West Burton as its principal settlement.
Locally the economy remains rooted in hill farming, with sheep and some upland livestock, but tourism and holiday lets have become important as walkers and cyclists come to enjoy the scenery; you’ll also find a village pub, a tight-knit community life and traces of older industries such as small-scale lead mining and water-powered mills in the surrounding valley. Historic field patterns, stone cottages and traditional village events give the place a strong sense of continuity with rural Dales life.
