Cross Hills and Steeton are neighbouring villages in North Yorkshire set in the broad, industrially shaped valley of Airedale, a short drive from market towns such as Keighley and Skipton and within commuting distance of Bradford and Leeds. The settlements sit close to the River Aire and the Leeds–Skipton transport corridors, with Steeton and Silsden railway station providing regular Airedale Line services, which has helped them evolve into popular residential bases for commuters while retaining a village feel.
Historically the area grew around small-scale textile mills and the canal and river links that moved goods across the valley, and traces of that industrial past remain in old mill buildings and street patterns. Today they offer a mix of local shops, pubs, community clubs and green spaces, with easy access to towpaths, walking routes and the wider Yorkshire Dales, so the villages balance a working, community-orientated life with ready access to scenic countryside.
